What is the Lapis Lazuli ring in Vampire Diaries?

What exactly is the Lapis Lazuli ring in the Vampire Diaries TV series and how does it protect them from the sunlight? Thanks.

Lapis is a type of stone. It is usually blue. It contains pyrite, which a form of iron - which for vampires is related to iron in the blood... thus, the stone has the properties of protection and prevents the vamps from getting too crispy. ;)
