Your Questions About Diamond

Helen asks…

Diamond?

what does the word "diamond" mean? And I don't mean like the shape or rockish thingy - i know it is something.

Diamond Lover answers:

Simply, diamond means something hard. It was referred to as 'adamant' in the past.

Jenny asks…

How is a diamond matched with its certificate?

I understand a diamond certificate, 4 C's etc. But what is to stop someone just selling a lower grade diamond with a certificate for a different, higher grade diamond?

I have heard that some have a number laser etched on the diamond which corresponds with the certificate, which is fine. Do all certificated diamonds have this? Will an EGL certified diamond have this for example?

Diamond Lover answers:

No, not all certified stones have laser inscriptions. And most EGL certs aren't worth the paper they're written on

Each diamond has distinct individual characteristics (feathers, cracks, inclusions, etc) which can be mapped out on an appraisal. So, before you buy a stone, ask if there is a map to go with the cert (most do) and look at the stone yourself under the scope.

Even if there is # inscribed on the stone, those can be done outside of the lab, so you still really need to check the stone yourself, if you're that concerned. However, why on earth would you give your money to a jeweler you didn't trust? Stay away from chain stores and anything in the mall... Find a local, independent jeweler, someone reputable and recommended by others, before you drop a single penny

good luck!

Mandy asks…

What makes the diamond the hardest mineral?

What makes the diamond the hardest mineral?
I have heard that something other is harder than a diamond, but I am not sure. So I don't really care about the other things, because I don't know them. So what makes the diamond, not other minerals, the hardest mineral?

Diamond Lover answers:

It's hardest because of it's chemical make-up. It's made of carbon and carbon atoms fit very well to each other. There is no space between so the object becomes very stable. Also, for diamonds, millions of years under the ground being squeezed by all the weight of the rock around it changes it from just being coal or some other form of carbon to diamond.

Donna asks…

How is a diamond the strongest material in the world?

I've heard that a diamond is the strongest material in the world since a diamond can only be cut by another diamond. I do not understand that. Can't it be cut or broken with a chainsaw or something? Even possibly a very strong hammer?

Diamond Lover answers:

Since we see the results every day in jewelry stores, we know that rough diamonds can be cut, but only by other diamonds -- usually in the form of diamond dust..

In most cases, a diamond will be cut with a saw blade. Since diamonds are the hardest material known (which means they cannot be scratched with any other substance), only diamonds can cut diamonds. So the diamond is securely mounted and held against a thin alloy blade impregnated with diamond dust and covered with linseed oil. As the blade turns, it carries small particles of new diamond dust which sticks to the oil and continues the process until the entire diamond is split in two. This can take several days for a diamond over 1 carat or more.

Linda asks…

How long after the first diamond begins to fall will the two diamonds be 24 m apart?

Two diamonds begin a free fall from rest from the same height, 1.9 s apart. How long after the first diamond begins to fall will the two diamonds be 24 m apart?

Diamond Lover answers:

There is not enough information to answer the question.

In a vacuum, the rate of acceleration due to gravity G is 9.8 meters per second at sea level. So after the first second, the first object would be 9.8 meters from the second object which is still at rest. After 1.9 seconds, the first object would be 27.4 meters from the second object. It doesn't matter what the objects are - they could be feathers or bricks - in a vacuum.

Diamonds have a specific gravity of 3.5, which is important because of the effects of friction from the atmosphere. You would have to provide the pressure altitude, temperature, and humidity of the atmosphere, as well as coefficient of drag of the diamonds, because drag of the atmosphere would affect the rate of fall of the diamonds. You would also need to know the.
