Someone tried to sell me medical grade Canadian hematites. Are there really "such" things? If so where would I find them? Thanks

I have not heard of "medical grade" hematite. I suspect that the seller may have been referring to magnetized hematite which is often used to make bracelets that are supposed to help relieve the wearer from pain...

Does hematite stone rust?

I recently bought a hematite stone ring and I'm paranoid about wearing it for long periods of time - thinking it might rust from the sweat off my fingers.

Technically, yes: hematite could combine with water to form an iron oxide-hydroxide mixture (this is actually what rust is). However, it is a slow process, and I don't think you would have much of a problem, unless you left your ring somewhere where it was exposed to wetting and drying cycles for an extended period (eg, on the edge of a sink). Keep the stone clean and dry, and you will have no problems.

Why did this hematite stone crack in my pocket?

My friend, who is rather spiritual, gave me a small hematite stone this morning to keep in my pocket. She told me it absorbs negative energy, and if there's too much negativity around, it cracks.
Well, I don't really believe in anything like that, but I put it in my pocket anyway. Lo and behold, a few hours later I took it out and there was a fine crack running down the middle. The stone was secure and gently jostled, so can anyone give me the REAL reason it cracked? Something about heat or pressure on it, perhaps?

Well, hematite does not have a hard hardness, or a soft one either, but it normally takes a fair amount of force to effect hematite... But if you want a science-like answer - it is just going to be that there must have been certain variables that cracked it, like heat or pressure.

Have things been more positive for you lately? Perhaps your friend was right...

Does anyone know... how do i magnetize a hematite stone?

Magnetized hematite is similar to magnetite, a naturally occurring relative of hematite. Magnetite and hematite are both iron oxide, but with slightly different formulas (magnetite is Fe3O4, while hematite is Fe2O3). The only other mineral that is noticeably magnetic is pyrite.

Magnetic hematite beads are polarized on on their sides; this makes them handy for "clasping" multiple strands together, holding matching bracelets and chokers nicely aligned. Be aware that magnets can interfere with (or might erase) magnetic storage such as floppy disks and other computer items. They also can interfere with magnetic badges and time cards. Most hematite beads are not strongly magnetic, so small quantities should not pose a risk, but if you have 10 strands of them, you might not want to set/store them near these items.
