Blue Nile is able to sell their diamonds for less because they do not have the overhead of the rent and other things retails stores have.

My advice to you however, after working for a jeweler, get the GIA certificate, if it is available, even if you have to pay more for it. Gemological Institute of America, or its equivalent will ensure you that you are getting a genuine stone which will up its insurance value

All gems, on Blue Nile and otherwise, are graded by a national and sometimes international standard. There is no deviation.

Brick and mortar stores are likely to tell you they are very rare because THEY will pay more than blue nile for the stones too. Consider that blue nile has access to MANY more diamonds than a little small town jeweler would and has much more in monetary resources to buy in bulk. This keeps cost down and they can pass the cost savings on to you.

Firstly, who certified the diamond.
1. GIA
2. Or AGS

If they have both been certified by the same agency, then a general comparison is possible. If, however, they are from varying agencies, there may or may not be problems.
