Going by Egyptian hieroglyphics, wooden inlays were used in caskets. In the fourteenth century, there is evidence of marquetry being done in cathedrals in Northern Italy. Several schools teaching marquetry sprang up all over Germany, Holland, and France, and slowly expanded to the United States.
A 'marquetarian' can make an intricate design on a jewelry box with many different types of veneer and yet all matched perfectly.
