Getting The Price Right With Gemstones
With any investment, you need to need what you are buying is worth the value asked for. This can be particularly hard with gemstones, as price varies stone to stone and because of the quality and cut of the stone. These variables play an important part in consideration of value, and are often the sole way we price gemstones on the market.
Gemstones are often priced by quality, which are denoted by the 4 C's:
- Clarity
- Colour
- Cut
- Carat (i.e. size).
Depending on the stone, the deeper the colour is and the better the clarity, the more precious and expensive the gemstone is likely to be. The bigger it is, the larger the carat and in turn the better the quality. The cut also plays an important part, but is not as significant as the others to the natural quality of the gemstone.
Another factor that determines the value of a gemstone is the variety itself. For instance, colour and durability have a great effect on the value we attribute to a stone. Diamonds are highly valued for their hardness, whilst Rubies are favoured for their colour. On the other hand, soft stones and brown coloured stones are often cheaper due to being in disfavour with popular gemstone aesthetics.
The value of a stone is not even always determined by rarity. You would think that this would be one of the main factors of pricing, yet, with some gemstones it is not. Sapphire is in fact one of the most expensive gemstones per carat because of its pure colour and hardness, yet it is not very rare. Classical gemstones, such as Sapphire, Ruby and Emerald often cost more because of their connection with royalty and the rich, making them the most expensive gemstones.
For lesser prices, you can find gemstones that are classically beautiful, such as aquamarine, amethyst and certain types of garnet and topaz. They may not have all the exact attributes of the top classical gemstones, but they certainly can be beautiful in colour and clarity.
Many gemstone specialists seek out rare stones, such as moonstone, as even though they may not be the best polished stone, they have an unusualness about them which makes them more exquisite. The rare gemstones still cost more than regular market gemstones (i.e. amethyst), but far less per carat than the classical gemstones.
Remember when buying gemstones to bear in mind the 4 C's and the type of gemstone you are buying. It will help you decide whether you are buying the gemstone for the right price or not.
