You need to have lapidary equipment such as a diamond band saw, although the same kind of saw that cut the slices can take off straight line cuts. Then you need a diamond grinding plate or rod to do the fine detail work along the edge.

Agate is one of the hardest minerals to polish. You will waste a lot of sandpaper because many of the papers have grits which are softer than the agate. A rock tumbler will polish them, if your grits are hard enough, but it will take time. Diamond saws will slice them nicely and if a fine enough grit is used with a controlled feed, polishing will be easier.
